An Outer Banks Adventure - Bob's Wild Horse Tours
Yesterday I was able to experience Bob’s Wild Horse Tours to see the Banker Spanish Mustang horses in the Northern Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is on my list of recommendations for people to experience on their vacation to the Outer Banks. Taking a guided tour is the best way to truly experience the area along with the expertise and knowledge provided by the guides. They are knowledgeable on the history of the area, the horses, they know some horses by name and they make it a fun filled 2 hour adventure.
It was a picture perfect beautiful day in Corolla yesterday. I was able to be with a fun group of people from upstate New York. Although this was my 3rd time for doing a tour to see the wild horses, every single time is a new adventure and experience. There is something quite magical seeing these horses roaming about among the sand roads, to the brush, and even up to homes that are nestled behind the sand dunes and over to the sound side.
There is great history on the Banker Spanish Mustangs and how they came to this region. I urge you to read more on the history from the Corolla Wild Horse Fund website. Their Mission from their website: “To protect, conserve, and responsibly manage the herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roaming freely on the northernmost Currituck Outer Banks, and to promote the continued preservation of this land as a permanent sanctuary for horses designated as the State Horse and defined as a cultural treasure by the state of North Carolina.” Check out their website: https://www.corollawildhorses.com/history-banker-mustangs/
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund has many ways you can support them from donations, sponsoring a horse, adoption, membership and volunteering. Check it out online or stop by their museum https://www.corollawildhorses.com/museum/
We saw so many horses on our tour. The first was the lone horse, Joaquin, which had a bird standing on its back.. There was a great story our guide told us about this horse. Then we found more horses grazing in the brush. Further into the tour, there were horses walking down the sand roads. We would even see many horses up near homes. It was truly an exciting time with every turn wondering where we would see the next horse.
We even saw deer hopping across the sand road. The drive up and back along the beautiful pristine beaches of the northern Outer Banks will make you realize why so many come to enjoy the peace, serenity and natural beauty of the 4 wheel drive area which stretches from north of Corolla to the Virginia State Line.
They are such beautiful animals. Yet tourists and locals alike must remember if they are visiting the four wheel drive area on their own, there is a county ordinance which makes it illegal to come within 50 feet of the horses and it is illegal to feed the wild horses. It is one of the reasons I recommend taking a professional guided tour to experience seeing the wild horses in all their glory.
We had a fantastic tour guide on our 2 hour excursion. She was fun, friendly and really engaged all the passengers. We rode in a covered open air truck (like on a safari) which gave the opportunity for an incredible up close experience to take photos of the horses and the scenery, too.
Bob’s Wild Horse Tours has been in business since 1996. I highly recommend them for your guided horse tour adventure! http://corollawildhorsetours.com/ Check them out on Facebook & Instagram, too!
